A climatic chamber is a test chamber or component of a measurement setup.

It is used to generate and maintain a specified climate, usually temperature and humidity, for the duration of the measurement or test.

Climatic chambers can vary in size, from that of a small room (approx. 9m2) up to a small hall (60…150 m2).

Where it is necessary to store goods at a constant temperature and humidity for a long period of time, a much smaller climatic cabinet should be used.

Uses of climate chambers

Climate chambers are used extensively in various industries to test products before they are introduced to the market. The aerospace industry uses climate chambers to test equipment in accordance with the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA) DO-160 standards, which include thermal and vibration aging tests. The automotive industry also relies on climate chambers to test new technologies for viability. The pharmaceutical industry uses climate chambers to conduct stability and stress tests to determine drug expiration dates and how they function during temperature changes and exposure to ultraviolet rays. Cosmetics are tested for stability using temperature, humidity, and light, while food and beverage industries use climate chambers to test shelf life under controlled conditions. Climate chambers are also used to test packaging materials and touch-sensitive instruments for long-term exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

Climate chamber tests

A climate chamber offers a variety of tests for environmental conditions that can be performed, including high humidity, light, and high temperature in combinations. This variability allows researchers to examine a product's characteristics from multiple perspectives. Climate chambers allow for manipulating and managing all conditions and environments using an array of mechanical processes, including heat, corrosive effects, humidity, and water.

Tests that can be completed using climate chambers include Accelerated Aging Testing, Altitude Testing, Humidity Climate Tests, Temperature Only Test Chambers, Testing for Corrosion, Thermal Shock, and Water Testing.

Climate chamber designs

Climate chambers simulate climatic conditions using various components and technical mechanisms. While manufacturers have proprietary designs, certain elements are common to all chambers, including climate systems that provide uniform air circulation and a cooling compressor system for precise climatic control. A steam humidifier is also essential for accurate measurements and compliance with FDA standards. A regulating system with a touchscreen interface controls the chamber and offers data management and documentation. Climate chambers have a tightly welded stainless steel inner lining with a heavy steel outer shell and insulation material for protection from the ambient environment.
