Blood banks

Since 1957, the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) has been establishing guidelines for blood banks and transfusion services. One of its recommendations is to regularly monitor the temperature of blood products, ensuring they remain within specified storage and transportation ranges. These ranges are categorized into three groups, such as the first group which dictates storage at 1 °C to 6 °C and transportation at 1 °C to 10 °C for whole blood, red blood cells, and blood plasma.

Tissue bank

Every establishment is free to determine if it is reasonably likely for temperature and humidity to have adverse effects on the human cells, tissues and cellular and tissue-based products (HCT/Ps) it stores and/or manufactures. Environmental conditions can facilitate contamination or cross-contamination of HCT/Ps or equipment as much as accidental exposure of HCT/Ps to communicable disease agents can.

Where appropriate, therefore, the environment should also be monitored for microorganisms. Indoors it is important to monitor temperature, relative humidity and differential pressure in order to avoid cross-contamination. Particles are monitored to measure the quantity of microorganisms.
